“As a professor for 30 years, I have been doing fundamental research, mostly for pure academic interest. But then came a wake-up call that what is important is whether the research can lead to something useful. The rate-jump method was developed initially from a purely academic attempt with a lot of papers published, but to achieve real impact, I took the further step to turn it into a GB National Standard, which has made a difference.”

“ATAL Multi-Stages Flocculation Sedimentation III (AMSFS III) x AlgoWater's journey from the initial concept to the finished product was marked by countless trials and challenges. During the development phase, our team effectively utilised the expertise and collaboration of our Group's regional teams from Hong Kong, Nanjing, and Shanghai. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to HKIE for recognising our Group with this prestigious honour, as it serves as a profound motivation to continuously refine and advance our product.”

“The Hong Kong Fire Services Department has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the development of innovative technologies for the enhancement of mountain search and rescue operations, with an aim to increase the likelihood of successful rescue operations.  

Our application utilised AI engines and advanced information from the mobile network operators to perform 3D viewshed analysis, which accurately and quickly locates missing person on mountains.  Our application was recognised with a Certificate of Merit at the HKIE Grand Award 2024, which was a great honour and encouragement for us. We are thankful for the opportunity to share our experience with the engineering community and the public.”

Winning the championship is still sinking in! We cannot believe it actually happened! My team and I tried our best to make the cardboard models based on our design of a city which is environmentally friendly and resource efficient. We had fun making the models especially after our visit to Arup.
At the Hong Kong Engineers Week Carnival, we first felt intimidated by the other competitors and we thought it would be nerve-racking going up onto the stage talking to hundreds of people. However, as the contest progressed and we managed to put up a solid performance, our fear vanished. Instead, we felt honoured to have had the opportunity to meet students from other schools.

When our team was announced the winner, we all jumped up in excitement. Overall, it was a great experience joining the contest, and I learnt that we should work hand-in-hand to create quality work.

在宣佈比賽結果前，我非常緊張，獲知得到冠軍那一刻，我們全都歡呼起來了，感覺這就像夢一般，我們激動得跳起來。我覺得我一直以來為這個比賽付出的努力都沒有白費。我很榮幸能參加這次比賽，也很感謝組員之間能互相配合，工程師及老師的幫助和鼓勵，我還很感謝所有欣賞我們作品的人能投我們一票。看着我們齊心合力所完成的作品，不禁想起參加這段比賽的日子既辛苦又忙碌，但卻帶給我難忘的時光。這段快樂又深刻的時光眨眼間就過了。這次經歷讓我了解到以人為本的重要性。充分體會到團隊精神，明白工程師的工作，也學會了更多環保的理念及設計。

我們取得這次比賽的冠軍，我非常開心，也要感謝各位老師的幫忙。我校第二組成功入圍，雖然快考試了，我每天仍抽時間製作模型，終於在遞交模型前，把最後一個建築物做出來了！比賽那天，我非常緊張，走上台時，我一直給自己加油打氣。宣佈結果時，主持說冠軍是我們，我們很高興。我慶幸大家的心思沒有白費！

We felt extremely pleased and encouraging to have won the championship of this design contest because we have spent so much time and effort creating a model of our dream city, a city which is sustainable, modern and vibrant. We worked on the model during recesses. Sometimes, we even took the model home to continue to work on it. We thank God that the model lived up to our expectations in the end. We were particularly grateful to our teachers who accompanied us and helped us all along the way.

學生參加香港工程師學會舉辦的「我們的夢想城市」，除了加深他們對工程建構的認識及興趣外，也通過與不同學校的同學分享製作作品的心得和技巧，提升他們的溝通能力，從而讓他們更了解每件作品的設計和理念。
此外，學生在比賽的過程中，加深了對香港的認識，使他們明白香港在城市規劃上，需要配合市民對追求身心靈健康的生活要求，做到以人為本，建設一個香港人喜愛的家。

Exciting news alert! The STEAM Team, coached by our PBPS teachers, has achieved an incredible feat! They won the championship on 3rd March 2024 in the ‘Our Dream City’ Primary Student Design Contest, organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.

For months, the team has dedicated their recesses and lunch breaks exploring the world of urban construction and engineering, understanding the importance of sustainable social development and designing their dream city. They then spent their after-school hours building models, assembling the models and meticulously decorating them to look like their full-sized counterparts.

The championship is therefore a celebration of their hard work, passion and determination. The team welcomed the good news with great joy. Congratulations, PBPS STEAM Team! You have made us proud.

A big thank you to our amazing mentor, Mr. Kenneth Ho, and the terrific engineers community of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers for making this event truly special and meaningful for us teachers and our PBPS STEAM Team.

During the competition process, our students learnt invaluable skills such as collaboration. They let their imaginations soar, dreaming up an innovative city and building it with creatively upcycled materials. Throughout their journey, I witnessed their perseverance, which deeply touched me. It’s an honour to have been part of students’ journey and to have helped them unleash their full potential. I was absolutely elated to receive news of the team’s victory. 黃慧晴：
感謝主辦單位香港工程師學會為我們舉辦這個比賽。過程中我學到土木工程師的工作，希望我們的夢想城市能加入智慧城市、智能家居及綠色生活、減少碳排放、提倡再生能源及再回收、保護自然資源，並創建綠色空間，使城市更加美麗和宜居，亦希望夢想城市裏面的市民都有五個核心價值, 包括愛德、生命、家庭、真理及義德。

感謝全港市民的支持，讓我們成為得票最多的隊伍。謝謝聖方濟愛德小學及吳老師帶領我們訓練及參加比賽，讓我們得到理想成績及寶貴經驗。我希望我們的夢想城市能建造嘉頓山及主教山纜車系統，亦建設跨海大橋連接夢想人工島及時光隧道，以AR擴增實境活化歷史及文化景點，建設科技及教育樞鈕、不同康文設施，把特色的街道例如「棚仔」移至空中步行街，建設多元種族和諧社區，延續美荷樓獅子山下精神。

謝謝聖方濟愛德小學王校長及秀茂坪天主教小學，讓我們能有機會到學校參與工作坊。我希望夢想城市能加入被動式節能建築, 盡量用自然光同自然風來調節建築物温度, 亦利用科技偵測極端天氣、過濾空氣，建設智能濾水廠、無人駕駛安全系統、3,5,7,8號空中幹線、電動飛行車航道, 磁浮列車、魚菜共生系統、海水化淡廠、温室及垂直花園。

馬樂琳：
感謝全港市民的支持，讓我們成為得票最多的隊伍! 我希望我們的夢想城市會保護和修復歷史建築，深水埗區擁有豐富的歷史建築，例如雷生春、美荷樓、前主教山配水庫、深水埗警署、聖方濟各堂、關帝廟等，保護和修復這些建築物，保持原貌和特色，同時加強宣傳和推廣這些歷史建築的價值和故事。我們亦重視自然環境的保護，包括創建城市綠地、保護生態系統、增加生物多樣性和減少生態破壞。

潘在樺：
多謝香港工程師學會一直推廣工程及舉辦活動。我們的夢想城市亦會把深水埗有特色的街道搬到空中步行街，讓步行空間更寬敞，例如棚仔、並把汝州街打造成珠仔街、基隆街打造成鈕扣街、大南街打造成皮革街、長沙灣道打造成時裝街、南昌街打造成花邊街，亦在這些空中步行街舉行藝術展覽、傳統工藝表演、吸引遊客和居民前來參觀，讓更多的人了解深水埗區歷史。

李梓鋒：   
感謝聖方濟愛德小學、吳老師、香港工程師學會及秀茂坪天主教小學。香港工程師周很有意義，在比賽過程中，我學到土木、建築、環保、機電、工業及機械工程的範疇，亦對工程產生興趣，我希望我們的夢想城市能增加綠化面積，改善空氣質量，減少熱島效應，提高城市的可持續性和生活品質，包括建築節能和人性化的城市空間。

我非常高興能在「我們的夢想城市」比賽中獲獎。這次比賽讓我學會了如何構思我的夢想城市的建築，並深刻反思了目前污染對環境造成的影響。在與隊友相處的過程中，我也學會了重要的團隊精神。最後，我要特別感謝老師們給予我耐心的指導。這次經歷對我來說是非常寶貴的，並且激發了我對城市規劃和環境保護的熱情。我期待著將來有更多機會實現我的夢想城市並為社會做出貢獻。

首先，我要感謝老師們給我機會，能夠代表學校參與這次的比賽。而且，我也非常感謝我的隊友們，沒有隊友們努力的付出： 一起設計、一起做手工、一起上台演講……就沒有「我的夢想城市」的出現。

在宣佈得獎名單前，我的心情非常緊張，緊張得心都快要跳出來了。當台上的主持人宣佈「柴灣角天主教小學第一隊」獲得季軍時，我和隊友們都一起尖叫起來，然後興高采烈地跑上台上領獎在頒獎嘉賓手上接過獎盃的一刻, 我和隊友們都眉開眼笑。

我想再次感謝老師們的幫忙,和隊友們的努力合作, 這次的比賽令我人生日記裹留下精彩和難忘的一頁。

我們的隊伍在這次比賽中獲得季軍，我感到非常興奮！首先，我要衷心感謝我們的老師們，他們在這次比賽中付出了很多努力，給予我們無價的指導和支持。同時，我也要感謝我的家人，他們一直在我身邊給予我無限的支持和鼓勵，讓我能夠堅持到最後。

然而，最令我感到驕傲的是我們隊伍內部的團結和凝聚力。我們相互尊重和包容，共同努力，才能順利地完成各項任務並且獲得這個獎項。

當主持人宣布我們隊伍獲獎的那一刻，我的心情簡直像是吃了一口蜜糖一樣，甜蜜而幸福。這次活動讓我深刻地明白到一個重要的道理，那就是在做任何事情的過程中，團隊精神和堅持不懈的精神是非常重要的。沒有團隊合作和彼此支持，我們很難取得成功。而只有擁有堅持不懈的精神，我們才能克服困難，突破自我，並取得卓越的成果。

To be honest, none of us has expected to win a prize, let alone the champion. I simply thought it was going to be a fun and valuable experience! That being said, this honour isn’t the only thing we have gained. I have personally learnt a lot more about what “engineering” truly is, and that it is also a very important part of our world, on par with other well-known fields, such as medicine and law.

Winning the competition is not something that we first considered. Our team gathered based on our interest in engineering, the thrill to experience more, and also the desire of widening our horizons. The moment we realise we won was unexpected and full of surprise, hereby I'm shouting a big thanks to all of our teammates and our alumnus that supported us and send us references, further enhancing our knowledge on engineering which led us to our trophy. On top of that, our team leader's brilliant performance was also a big factor that brought us to victory. This competition had indeed brought us an unforgettable and precious experience. I am very honoured to have a chance to participate in such an exciting engineering-oriented event, and winning the first prize was something that the team had never expected in the first place. It was quite a journey for the team to claim the trophy, as we are merely a tiny paper boat sailing across the sea of knowledge, and the questions we were asked upon were actually quite challenging in our aspect. Not only did we gain facts from the event, but also leaving a full page of memories to be treasured and reminisced--no matter whether they were laughter or tears. Engineering and architecture have long been a dream of mine. Thank you for helping me out on pursuing my dream, HKIE!

This competition is really interesting and l have learnt a lot of new knowledge. I didn’t know that engineering can bring me to such a new world before I joined this competition. During the Q&A session, I have gained a lot of knowledge which I cannot learn from our textbook. I’m honoured to be rewarded the prize.
